What is Black Tea?

Black tea, as with all tea types, is made from the leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant. It is a type of tea that is more fermented than any of the other tea types and is generally stronger in flavour than the other varieties.

Black tea undergoes the process of fermentation or oxidation. After the harvest the leaves are withered, rolled and heated by blowing air onto them. The leaves are allowed to ferment completely and are then dried.

Like a good wine, black tea improves with age and retains its flavour for several years.

Black tea has a wealth of health benefits. Drinking black tea may assist with reducing the risk of stroke, and help to lower blood pressure and cholesterol and boost the immune system. Black tea contains tannins that have the ability to fight viruses and protect against colds and flu. It is calming and relaxing, so is perfect to drink after a long day.

Abbey Tea invite you to try their organic, premium Lapsang Souchong tea which has a natural, light smoky aroma, changing into a more mellow sweeter taste after several infusions, and Yunnan Golden Buds a delicious mellow black tea, one of our favourites.
